Maca is a small root vegetable grown at high altitudes in the Andes, in some of the most highly mineralised soils that exist.
Peruvians have eaten maca for centuries to support a healthy hormonal balance. They traditionally believe it can enhance fertility and libido and is a source of extra energy and stamina.
It is well known as the Incan Superfood. It has a rather distinctive malted flavour and can be incorporated into smoothies, your own raw concoctions, or sprinkled onto cereals and the like. Have 1 - 3 teaspoons per day.
Maca contains polypeptide proteins, and significant amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Other minerals include iron, silica, and trace amounts of Iodine, manganese, zinc, copper and sodium. Vitamins in maca are riboflavin(B2), thiamine(B1), and vitamin C .
Warnings and advice:
It is advised to avoid using Maca in cases of hormone-related cancers (breast, ovarian, uterine, testicular, prostate, etc); some bladder or liver diseases; high blood pressure. It is not recommended to take maca if on fertility drugs; black cohosh; dong quai; ginseng or licorice root.
